An artificial lawn looks neat and even, is usually perfectly flat, and is the ideal shade of green to make the whole garden look lovely. However, by far the biggest reason most people have for choosing artificial grass is its low maintenance. So, “what’s all this about taking care of artificial grass?” we hear you cry. Don’t worry, it’s nothing like caring for a real grass lawn, but there are things you need to do.
Here 5 things you need to know about keeping your artificial lawn in top condition:
You should clear surface debris regularly
The leaves, dirt, blossom, twigs etc that can accumulate on your lawn will not only make it look messy but will make their way into the pile of the grass if you don’t clear it away in a timely fashion. This makes it harder to tease out of the blades but can also lead to pests or weeds penetrating it. Just sweep regularly with a brush. This will also keep the pile nice and bouncy.
You can clean it, like a carpet
In fact, an outdoor carpet is exactly what it is. When you think of it in these terms, rather than as a grass lawn, you can see how cleaning it actually makes a lot of sense. Cleaning the lawn achieves 4 things: as well as cleaning, it disinfects, deodorises, and fragrances it. This is important because it can harbour various things including dirt, germs, bacteria, mould, and algae. As you would imagine, this is particularly the case when you have dogs or cats using it as a toilet but even if you don’t have pets of your own, there could still be animals using it such as neighbourhood cats or even foxes.
Don’t clean it with household cleaners
Using standard household cleaners, such as bleach, runs the risk of damaging or discolouring the grass. By using an artificial grass cleaner, which is a specifically formulated product, you know that it will deal with the dirt and contaminants it needs to without harming the material.
Cleaning it requires minimal effort
There’s no need to worry, your low maintenance lawn is still low maintenance as cleaning it is very simple (and way less effort than mowing a real lawn!). You simply dilute the cleaner to the required ratio (usually 1:2) and apply it to the surface of the grass using a watering can or garden sprayer. Just allow it to dry and that’s all there is to it. If the grass is particularly dirty, or you haven’t done it for a long time (or ever!), you can use the product neat. In this case, leave for 20 minutes and then rinse with clean water. In both cases, keep pets and children away until the grass is dry.
You can make it smell like real grass!
While an artificial lawn has all the attributes of a perfect, real grass lawn (if you worked at it like a professional groundskeeper!), the one thing you miss out on is the smell of freshly mown grass – the aroma of summer itself! Well, you can have that as well, as the artificial grass cleaners come in a range of scents, including a freshly cut grass one! Alternatively, you can choose floral or lavender.
